Saturday Night Live 44 with Kanye West, Adam Driver posts solid ratings
Overall, this episode (which featured a memorable opening with Matt Damon as Brett Kavanaugh, and also a controversial conclusion featuring Kanye West discussing his political views) ended up drawing a 2.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic. This was a small improvement from the premiere hosted by Ryan Gosling last year.
So what was the reason for this? We do think that one of the biggest reasons for the bump is simply the controversy with West on board; meanwhile, we do think that there were probably a good many out there who were curious to see precisely how the show would insert the Supreme Court confirmation hearings for Kavanaugh into the episode. We noted in the premiere review and the video below (be sure to subscribe to CarterMatt on YouTube for more) that there was probably a case of overkill here with the hearings mentioned on three different occasions; yet, getting three different performances from West was also rather notable in its own right.
Next week, SNL is going to bringing something very different to the table, as Crazy Rich Asians star Awkwafina is going to be performing alongside musical guest Travis Scott. Meanwhile, on October 13 former cast member Seth Meyers is going to be making a big return as host himself; meanwhile, he is going to be joined by musical guest and longtime show favorite Paul Simon. This seems to be more of a throwback show, one that could balance things out after next week’s show seems to be very much for a super-current audience who went to the movies this summer. Awkwafina is a bit of a wild card in that we don’t know precisely how she will do in this venue; yet, we are certainly excited to find out.
