Chicago Fire on set: Dick Wolf hopes One Chicago lasts many more years
With that in mind, he remains hopeful that all three of his Chicago shows will be around for the long haul, and he told us all about it as Chicago Fire is entering its seventh year on the air. Speaking to CarterMatt and other reporters at One Chicago Day this week, Wolf had the following to say on the series’ longevity:
“I tend to think that they can last for as long as possible. As for what that is, I certainly hope more than ten years each … The most satisfying part of crew relationships hasn’t happened here yet, but with the New York shows, there are a lot of two-generation families and that’s really satisfying.”

By “two-generation families,” Wolf is speaking about crew members going from being parents to grandparents over the course of a series’ lifespan. He’s talking about getting a chance to be part of multiple decades of crew members’ lives and the deep satisfaction that comes with being able to provide steady employment and opportunities for these people. That’s why so many of his shows have been about more than just one person, largely because it enables them to keep going even if certain people leave. We’re not sure that Law & Order: SVU could last without Mariska Hargitay, but with so many of his other shows over the years we have seen a great deal of flexibility. Chicago PD, for example, has already moved on past Sophia Bush, and Chicago Fire is moving forward without Monica Raymund.
All of One Chicago will premiere on NBC come Wednesday, September 26 — Chicago Med will lead the way, following by Chicago Fire and Chicago PD.
