NCIS season 16 debate: Should there be a big Gibbs flashback episode?
Take, for example, with Mark Harmon’s character of Gibbs. How much more of the story is there going to be left to tell in the past?
We’ll be the first to say that for shows with 24-episode seasons, we love having flashback episodes. They give us a chance to learn more about main characters and while we like to think that there is a lot we know about Gibbs, it still feels like there’s a lot of information underneath the surface. There’s a lot of ground to touch on with his service, his childhood, or even his time as a young adult.

To be specific, we have three different ideas as to how Gibbs’ past could be brought to the forefront in the past.
1. A forgotten mission – Is it possible that an issue from more than 30 years ago pops up again in the present, something that Gibbs long forgot about? We think it’s a great way to get another look at this character, especially since there’s no way that Gibbs is going to remember everything that he did so many years ago.
2. A lost girlfriend – We’re not talking here about any of his ex-wives, but is there someone, whether it be a teenage fling or someone who he loved who didn’t love him back, who comes back needing his help? While we don’t think he needs a love interest in the present (except for maybe Sloane), this could be the sort of character who causes him to take stock in where his life is now and some of the people who are in it. Basically, it could bring him closer to Sloane.
3. Unexplored family history – Even though the great Ralph Waite is no longer with us, do you want to explore more of Gibbs’ relationship with his father in the past, or with some other member of his family from many years ago? These are the things that better inform the person that he is to day.
The main message we’re trying to get across here is very simple: When you’ve got a character as memorable and as iconic as Gibbs, it only makes sense that you want to explore his past as much as possible. It’s the best way to greater inform his present.

To be honest, I’d rather see a flashback with McGee. As a navy brat, he was all over the world and perhaps someone he knew as a child is involved with a case. Plus it would be really interesting to see young McGee’s relationship with his dad since we knew that did have a good relationship at one point (McGee learned how to operate a ham radio from his father) before it soured. It would be especially pertinent now that Tim is a father as his kids grow up. Plus we might even get a Delilah sighting!
