Chicago Fire season 7 spotlight: What’s next for Kelly Severide?
Let’s kick things off with a reminder as to what happened at the end of season 6: Kelly found himself dealing with the return of his ex Renee Royce, while also trying to help Boden with a potential promotion within the Chicago Fire Department. With Dawson’s exit, he’s going to need to be a good friend to Casey, who will almost certainly need him. These guys didn’t exactly start off the series on the right foot, but over time they’ve developed a bond — even if they do have their fare share of arguments along the way.
Let’s start with the first thing that needs to be addressed for Kelly moving into season 7: The state of his relationship with Stella Kidd. While she may think that everything is okay now and Severide isn’t going to see Renee anymore, he also didn’t mention to her the kiss that happened in the finale. Don’t you think that this is going to come back to bite him? It’s certainly something that could inject enough doubt for Renee to start to think that there isn’t all that much when it comes to a romantic future for the two.
As for the job itself, we would be more than happy to see Severide move up the ladder somewhat, especially if Boden is promoted and Casey ends up taking his place. We know that one of the big struggles with Chicago Fire is that you want to see characters move up the ladder, but you also don’t want to see a situation where you don’t see as much of a character because they’re not at 51. That’s why we want to see Severide stick around there.
Also, can we have more of Kelly’s parents? Some of the best work that Taylor Kinney does on this show is when he gets to play Severide around his father, so there is absolutely some merit in finding a way to bring them back into mix. We saw both of them have a role in season 6, but it still feels like there is a lot to be resolved there.
