How Power season 5 is about smashing expectations

Power season 5 is set to premiere on Starz could Sunday, and it already feels like there are many different ways in which the show could surprise us. In many ways, that’s the sign that you are doing something right. You want to be able to still test your viewers, and not make them think that they can automatically assume what you’re going to do in the future just on the basis of everything that you’ve done in the past.

So what can you expect through season 5 in general? That’s a subject that show executive producer Courtney Kemp touched on more in a new interview with TV Guide:

“Legend versus legacy [is the them of the season] … Legend is the story you tell about yourself. Legacy is the thing you leave behind. Dre’s legend is that he can handle it but the legacy is, maybe not. Angela’s legend is that she’s one of the good guys — that she’s on the side of right. Maybe not. It’s going be a fun season because it’s about subverting expectations.”

Obviously, a big part of what makes this season so interesting right now is that many of these legacies and these narratives are still very much a work in progress. Nothing has been 100% pinned down just yet, and it can change depending on what sort of game-changing moves are done from here on out. We do think that there are many characters on the show that consider themselves to be one of the good guys, and believe in their heart that they will do what they can with that in mind.

Yet, here’s the funny thing: When your back starts to be pinned against the wall, that’s when desperate times can lead to some desperate measures. We certainly think that this is probably going to be the case moving forward.
