Emilia Clarke on her final Game of Thrones season 8 scene
In speaking on this subject in a new interview with Vanity Fair for their recent cover story, Clarke (who is currently promoting Solo: A Star Wars Story leading up to its premiere) had the following to say:
“[It] f—ed me up … knowing that is going to be a lasting flavor in someone’s mouth of what Daenerys is…”
We think that there is one word of particular value in here more than any other — and for those wondering, we’re not talking about the swear word. Instead, the word that interests us the most here is saying what Daenerys is as opposed to who Daenerys is. It strips away some of her identity as an individual person in favor in terms of something more abstract. Is Clarke speaking about her as a hero, a monster, or something else entirely?
One of the things that has long been appealing about Daenerys as a Game of Thrones character is that there is a certain element of moral ambiguity to her. We do know a good bit about her heroics, but there have always been questions about how much of herself as a person she is willing to sacrifice in order to be a conqueror or a ruler. She has freed many slaves, but she also hasn’t been resistant to the idea of killing either innocent people or people who are innocent by association — sometimes, people just follow the wrong ruler and have done nothing else wrong. We would hope that an association with Jon Snow would bring the best out of the Mother of Dragons, but maybe she won’t quite feel that way upon realizing that Jon is actually related to her by blood.
