13 Reasons Why season 3: Prepare to see less Hannah, if renewal happens

13 Reasons Why season 3

Are we going to see less of Katherine Langford as Hannah on 13 Reasons Why season 3, provided of course that happens? Based on most indications we have, it certainly feels that way.

Speaking on this subject in a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, showrunner Brian Yorkey had the following to say about how the character could factor into the story, and precisely how it could be different:

“Should we get a season 3, the loss of Hannah will continue to be the inciting traumatic event for this group of kids and parents. It will always be part of the story … But I don’t see a tremendous continued presence for Hannah because I think we needed her to finish telling everyone else’s side of her story and we needed her so that Clay could get to a point of saying, ‘I love you and I let you go.’ If the story does continue, and certainly there is lots more to know about a lot of these characters, then the spotlight focus on Hannah Baker is probably done.”

Ultimately, the way in which we view this is like this: Hannah is a catalyst, but she doesn’t have to be the focal point. Characters can move forward and that’s very much okay. What should be the impetus at this point instead is getting a chance to see how characters try to move forward while holding those memories close. This is a show that does need to veer into some new directions, but it still does remain to be seen whether or not a new direction is needed in the first place. While there was a ton of buzz and attention surrounding the first season of 13 Reasons Why, season 2 so far has been a little more muted. Maybe there is a sentiment that the show has already told the necessary story, or maybe it’s just the climate is a little bit different given how events on the series were so similar to real-life events.
