Holly Marie Combs makes thoughts on Charmed reboot clear

The Charmed reboot is coming up on The CW Sunday nights this fall, and it feels almost like an understatement to say that it is controversial. The original trailer has led to a polarizing reaction, and to date much of the marketing to date has been strange. While it is great to see a show celebrating inclusivity and empowerment, there’s been a bizarre implication through much of it that it’s doing something that the original isn’t. That, in turn, has led to frustration from both fans of the original and also the cast and crew who worked on it. At times, it feels like the current Charmed is trying to make a name for itself by differentiating itself from the original, something that it definitely doesn’t need to do in order to have some success.

One of the best responses that we’ve seen to the reboot yet comes via original star Holly Marie Combs, who explains in a Twitter message shared below that she appreciates the fact that the show has allowed many actors and crew members to have jobs; yet, she’s also concerned with the implications that the show is giving in its marketing so far. It’s a nuanced, thoughtful message that looks at the original fans of the show while taking about this new version and what it could bring to the present.

In the end, the biggest question that is worth wondering is simply this: Can we really judge anything just yet? For now, we’d say not too much. Most of the promotional material to date for the new Charmed was created quickly and to obvious draw attention, and it may not be fully in line with the show itself. The end product is worth a chance, but it’s better to treat it as a separate entity rather than comparing it to the original in any form. That may be impossible since the stories are so linked, but it’s probably nonetheless for the best. The reboot can’t quite recapture the magic (pun intended) on the original and its impact on pop culture.
