Call the Midwife season 8 filming officially right around the corner

Jennifer Kirby

The Call the Midwife season 8 filming start day is almost here! As of late, we’ve been checking off some of the boxes that bring us to this momentous occasion and we’re finally right about there.

Recently, we reported that one order of business was completing a costume fitting. Now, the next seems to be, at least for the actress behind the Valerie Dyer character in Jennifer Kirby, getting her hair styled to mirror Valerie’s look! Filming should be starting soon, and if this is like past seasons the first order of business is going to be putting together the upcoming Christmas Special. These episodes are feature film length and are often both heartwarming and heartbreaking. They could also be a rite of passage for whatever is coming up around the bend.

(Warning: There are some season 7 spoilers ahead — if you are watching in America at the moment, be sure to know that in advance.)

One of the largest mysteries entering the upcoming season is precisely what is going to happen with many of the main characters. Barbara died at the end of season 7, which means in the turn that the future of Jack Ashton as Tom is somewhat in flux. Meanwhile, you also have to wonder when Trixie is going to return after her decision to go away and heal at the midway point in season 7. In real life this story was written in to accommodate the pregnancy of star Helen George, so we hope that on the other side of that we do get more of Trixie, who is the longest-tenured midwife at Nonnatus House.

Provided that she is returning, this upcoming Christmas Special could be the first for the Lucille character; meanwhile, we anticipate that there will be a new face or two either during this special or at some point early on in season 8 proper, which most likely is going to premiere on the BBC at some point in early 2018. The BBC has a nice tendency to release little assorted updates of filming along the way, so we have a hard time thinking that this is going to change this time around.
