Call the Midwife season 8 filming is gearing up already

It really wasn’t all that long ago that season 7 ended in the United Kingdom. Yet, all signs point towards Call the Midwife season 8 filming starting off in the near future.

In a new post on Twitter this week, actor Stephen McGann (Dr. Turner) revealed officially that he had his costume fitting for the upcoming season of the show — a big sign that production will be here before you know it! The first order of business with this series is filming the Christmas Special, which poses some major challenges in that you have to convert spring in the United Kingdom to look like winter. (We certainly saw that with the past special courtesy of the Big Freeze story.) Beyond what is coming up here, you of course get the eight-episode season proper.

It shouldn’t come as much of a shock to anyone that McGann would be returning to the series, given that he has been an incredible performer on the show over the years and beyond that, Poplar definitely needs a character like Dr. Turner to offer some stability right now. With Barbara gone the future of Tom is not entirely clear, especially since he may opt to get a fresh start elsewhere. Meanwhile, we assume that Trixie will return, but her presence is not 100% confirmed at present. It’s possible that other actors could leave, as well, but there have not been any other convenient exits written into the story. If someone else goes it could pose some significant story challenges.

Call the Midwife season 8, beyond the Christmas Special, will likely premiere on BBC in January 2019. Beyond that, there will be at least one more season coming — hopefully at around this point a year from now the network will start to address whether or not there could be a season 10 (we already know that there will be a season 9). For now, though, we figure it is best to just celebrate this exciting new chapter of the story.
