Why a Doctor Who season 12 early announcement would prove fruitful

Is a Doctor Who season 12 official over at BBC One in the UK? That largely depends on both where you’re looking and then also who you are asking.

What CarterMatt knows (at least at the moment) is that there are some licensing deals in place for the next several years in the event that the series returns — which many expect for it to. We just think that it could benefit the network and the producers at large to go ahead and make the renewal announcement, and it’s for a number of different reasons.

For starters, making this announcement early is a tremendous show of faith to new showrunner Chris Chibnall that they are a big believer in his vision and that he is going to be creating some more beautiful stories beyond the ones set to air later this year. It’s also a show of faith to new Doctor Jodie Whittaker that they believe in her — provided that she sticks around for more than one year. (We assume that she would, but she revealed in a recent interview that she is not allowed to talk about the length of her contract.)

Making a big, formal announcement is just a way for the series to ease some minds and create a positive, celebratory atmosphere surrounding the new era and there could be some great opportunities to do so later this summer, presumably coinciding with the release of a new trailer or a panel at a convention like San Diego Comic-Con. In general, that’s when we hope some of the veils start to be lifted on this series a bit, given that to date so much of the series has been surrounded in a shroud of heavy mystery.

Ultimately, even with a quiet announcement we hardly feel as though Doctor Who is going anywhere — there is a reasonably good chance that the show will remain on the air. We just feel like the more flash that is behind the announcement, the more excited it will make everyone all over the globe.
