Saturday Night Live music: Migos perform ‘Stir Fry,’ ‘Narcos’

Migos

This weekend’s new Saturday Night Live episode featured a performance from Migos, a group that, immediately, we know almost nothing about save for the fact that they are a group who raps. We’ve seen them at various awards shows, but suffice it to say this music article required a little more research than some of the others that we’ve done over time.

The first song from Migos was “Stir Fry,” and we’ll give them credit first and foremost for their style — it was one of the best ensembles that we’ve seen from performers this season. Yet, we don’t really know how many of the lyrics that we actually understood. The levels were off to the extent that we could barely hear them over the band — beyond that, so much of the vocals were auto-tuned. That didn’t make anything either.

Basically, the first performance was a prime example of someone appealing to their core audience and virtually not anyone else. The style and the visual presentation were great, but the mix and the performance itself just didn’t have enough of a spark. (Of course, we’re sure that there are plenty out there who are going to disagree with that assertion.)

Second song – This was a song entitled “Narcos” that is relatively new to the group — it’s only been out for about a month or so. Yet, it has already been listened to more than five million times on YouTube alone. What we did like about the song was that the vibe was a little bit more relaxed, and what that did was give us a little bit more of an opportunity to actually hear more of the words to the song itself — it also just felt like the camera-work was better centered on the guys and it complimented what they were doing better.
