Outlander notes: David Berry celebration, My Peak Challenge, controversy, and more

David Berry

Ready for another edition of Outlander notes? We’ve got a lot of interesting stuff to get through today, so let’s kick things off with a bit of a celebration!

Today is the birthday for none other than Lord John Grey himself in David Berry. Hopefully he has a tremendous one! Berry was known by many already for his work in A Place to Call Home, but Outlander has allowed him to reach a new audience of people who are not anywhere near as familiar with his work. Lord John is a tremendous role, and it remains one of the ones on Outlander with the most upside. This is, after all, what happens when there is an entire series of spin-off novels all about your character. It opens up all sorts of room in order to explore some different possibilities.

For now, we just hope that there are some more great scenes coming up featuring Berry in season 4, which of course premieres on Starz later this year.

The new My Peak Challenge video

Are you familiar with Sam Heughan’s health, fitness, and charity initiative? It’s a great way to kick off the new year by getting in better shape, making new friends, and support others in need. It’a great way to find a peak (pun intended) version of yourself.

Check out the video below, featuring Heughan, for some additional information including where you can go to sign up and understand the cause more. It’s a nice introduction to what being a “peaker” really is.

Let’s talk controversy

Namely, one of the recent tweets from Starz about the show. We won’t spend too much time on this, largely because we feel like the majority of readers out there share our point of view and we’re preaching to the choir here.

We do get what Starz is trying to do in talking about Jamie – Claire sex scenes (use edgy content as a means to get new viewers to watch — this sort of marketing does work), but the emphasis on them above all else does diminish the true brilliance of the series: Powerful performances, a lush landscape, and a simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking story about love. It’s so much more than just sex and it deserves to be celebrated as such. For however few additional viewers this sort of promotion gets, is it really worth it?
