Moe Dunford leaving Vikings as Aethelwulf; what happened?

Moe Dunford leaving

Is Moe Dunford leaving Vikings and the character of Aethelwulf behind? Based on Wednesday night’s new episode, it’s fair to say so.

What happened? Based on the events of Wednesday night’s new episode, let’s just say that there were quite a few surprises within. None were bigger than seeing the death of this prominent character, especially the way in which it happens. Based on everything that we’ve seen from Aethelwulf over the years, who would have anticipated that a bee sting of all things would take this guy down? It was shocking, to say the least, and the historical record doesn’t feel so concrete that they had to kill the character off in such a way. Why have it happen this week, other than to reinforce some sort of opinion that nobody on the show is safe?

Ultimately, you can make the argument that Vikings is doing something similar here to what Game of Thrones often has a tendency to do, where they opt to kill off major characters in penultimate episodes. Think in terms of Ned Stark in season 1 of that show or the Red Wedding in season 3. (Aethelwulf’s death was obviously not anywhere near as shocking.)

If you do love Moe Dunford, you can see him in another series right now in Striking Out. Hopefully, there will be even more opportunities to see other great TV roles featuring the character in the near future. One of the things that many Vikings actors have going for them following their time on the show is a resume. You’ve gotten a chance to star in one of the biggest, most-popular shows of its kind on cable. You establish an audience of people who love to see you, and as a result of that there’s a good chance you will find more of an audience moving forward. Fingers crossed for Dunford.
