Is Keith Carradine leaving Madam Secretary as President Dalton?
First and foremost, we do have to say that this episode was one of the most pressing that the show has ever made, largely because of one simple question: Is President Dalton unfit to serve as President? There are questions aplenty in this episode, and much of them started the moment that Dalton started to run around proclaiming that he was ready to issue a strike against Russia. An international incident caused his to spiral out of control, and that in turn led to speculation galore as to whether he was thinking properly. Was Dalton of his right mind? Was he really fit to serve? Everyone was worried, and the more that this episode went along the greater the fears became.
There is a precedent in the Constitution in which a President can be removed from office — but it hasn’t exactly been tested. It’s not something that anyone really wants to test for obvious reasons.
Yet, during this episode we started to see some of those discussions happen for Secretary McCord and some of the other main characters — they had to. The fate of the Republic was in danger and they couldn’t figure out the reasoning for the President’s odd behavior. It was coming out of nowhere and they were quickly finding that he would replace anyone that was coming at him in a confrontational way.

As for whether or not it actually happened…
Not so much. While there was a vote to remove Dalton from office, eventually he was convinced to have a doctor look at him. In doing so, it was determined that he had a tumor that needed to be removed that was causing his erratic behavior patterns. He was perfectly fine to continue serving, but he needed to have an operation to correct some of what was plaguing him.
Because of that, tonight’s episode ended with power (temporarily) being handed over to the Vice-President. So, it doesn’t appear as though Carradine is leaving the show. By the time we return from the long hiatus, we could see the character back in action.
