Big Little Lies season 2: Why are there behind-the-scenes changes?

Following the enormous series of wins at the Golden Globes, the pressure is on Big Little Lies to deliver a worthy follow-up … one that you can argue that they don’t even need.

Why isn’t director Jean-Marc Vallée returning for Big Little Lies season 2? He, alongside the cast, source writer Liane Moriarty, and script writer David E. Kelley, was a big reason for the show’s success. Unfortunately, it seems as thought scheduling just so happened to get in the way.

Speaking backstage about the big win per TVLine, star / executive producer Reese Witherspoon noted that there were overtures to bring Jean-Marc back to the director’s chair; it was not until later down the line they realized that they weren’t going to be able to work it out:

“We are so deeply grateful to Jean-Marc Vallée: his vision and his artistry… he put his heart and soul into this … unfortunately, he was busy. We did try to accommodate him, but we did want to get the season started soon, because I think the people want it soon.”

Big Little Lies season 2 is gearing up to premiere on HBO presumably either late this year or at some point in 2019; that seems to be the timing that best makes sense. We’re surprised that the turnaround is ultimately happening here so quickly, just because there are so many scheduling conflicts that could have been hard to resolve with this cast. Yet, they clearly all loved working together so much and this story proved so fruitful that there were some serious motives for all of them to get back together and do this on at least one more occasion.

For those who were not aware, Andrea Arnold is coming on board to direct the entirety of the second season. Given that Big Little Lies seasons are ultimately short, it’s important for them to have a singular voice behind the scenes. Having a single director helm all episodes of an American television show is rare, and there’s a reason for that: The commitment to making the stories great has to be constant and almost unparalleled.
