Top Chef: Colorado: Who was eliminated in Sudden Death Quickfire?

Top Chef: Colorado premiere

We opened Top Chef: Colorado episode 3 with a personal story for one Laura Cole. The Alaska chef doesn’t spend a lot of time in the lower 48 states, let alone being away from her son for so long. These little human touches, while brief, are a reminder of what makes this show great — they inject a little bit of heart into what can be a cutthroat competition.

Speaking of cutthroat, we almost immediately went from that personal moment into a dangerous Sudden Death Quickfire. This was all about constructing the perfect dish using Denver omelet ingredients and it proved to be a challenge for some. While Brother Luck (we still love that name) was the victor, Tanya Holland was in the bottom alongside Rogelio Garcia and Laura. Based on the edit at the start of the episode we weren’t shocked to see Laura in this spot. Her head wasn’t quite in the competition at the time of the Quickfire.

When Tom Colicchio ended up introducing the challenge — constructing the perfect omelet — it sounded easy in theory. Yet, it was the specific type of omelet (a French omelet) that made this a challenge. There was a very specific technique to it and if you make one wrong move, it could end up sending you home.

The three judges had to decide who to send home — unfortunately, it was Laura who went home here. She struggled to get her omelet done in time — it’s the sort of mistake that no chef would make in real life. You don’t have the same sort of crazy time limits unless you’re trying to time things out at the same time as other dishes. If nothing else, you can always just start over and not run the risk of being eliminated. Laura’s time on the show ended in a really sad way just because there really wasn’t any sign at all of a struggle going into this episode. It just seemed as though she had a bad day, and sometimes on Top Chef one bad day is enough to send you packing.
