Longmire season 7: What stories could be touched on in possible movie, miniseries?
The first thing to note here is that there is certainly interest from most of the cast and crew in telling more of Walt Longmire’s story, though that doesn’t mean for certain we’re going to see something like this happen. There are still several hurdles that are in the way, with the main one being sorting out rights / legal issues and finding a new home or way to make it happen financially.
For now, here’s where CarterMatt could see some of these characters’ stories going.
Walt – For our main character, retirement doesn’t signify the end of the road. It’s really just another beginning and another opportunity for him to figure out how to contribute to the world. We anticipate him still playing a role in investigating crimes and it would be rather fun to see him more independent of some of the rules that come with him being a Sheriff. We also want to see what a future with Vic would look like after the two finally got together in the finale.
Vic – She’s going to be one of the biggest voices now within the Sheriff’s Department (presumably), and we could easily see her doing what she can in order to follow in Walt’s footsteps and try to make sure that his legacy lasts. She gets a chance to live her own life and career while coming home to Walt at the end of the day.
Henry – He should have some trouble leading the Four Arrows Casino in the early going, given that he’s not exactly qualified for this line of work. Yet, there should be something very compelling about seeing him tackle some of these problems while feeling nostalgic for his days at the Red Pony.
The Ferg – We picture a big wedding for him and Meg alongside many kids. The Ferg’s a happy guy and he deserves the happiest possible life. Seeing him balancing having a family and this dangerous job is ripe territory for a character like him to explore.
Cady – If she does become the new Sheriff, that does offer up a chance for Walt to be able to get roped into new cases from many different directions. We do wonder what that could mean for her new relationship with Zachary, provided that the two parties are still going strong. That would be interesting to explore.
Even with the changes Longmire season 7, no matter the form it’s in, would still be Longmire. That’s why the idea is so fun to think about.

in a nutshell, my thoughts for the future went something like this:
Walt treasure hunting, getting bored and eventually doing PI-type work, but without the goofiness of zoom-lens cameras and such, helping Henry keep the Four Arrows under control, helping Mathias from time to time, and of course helping the Absaroka County Sheriff’s Department!
Vic continuing as a Deputy, has to play Sheriff after Walt leaves (until the election), making a few big cases, getting into a couple of (really) close calls and deciding she’s not going to put herself in the position of getting killed and leaving Walt alone (again) – she quits, and they do the off-the-record policing stuff together, possibly even getting pregnant again (years down the road – and before the age-difference-nay-sayers chime in – my husband and I are 16 years apart – our youngest was born when he was 51 :-)
Standing Bear runs the Four Arrows, finds satisfaction in seeing the positives it has created for The People, becomes a leader on the Tribal Council, and regularly visits Nighthorse in prison – he is instrumental in keeping the Tribal Council from banishing Nighthorse, stands in his defense, and even asks Nighthorse to run the Red Pony after his release
Nighthorse did all the wrong things for all the right reasons, his loyalty to The People, and his mistrust of anyone not Cheyenne, led him; he serves time for embezzling and is released with little notice, Standing Bear was the only Cheyenne to visit him
Cady/Zach – I think she doesn’t get elected as Sheriff (unknown challenger runs against her and wins, due to her lack of experience, of course), but I do think she becomes Mayor (Sawyer SUCKS!! He’s totally gone!) I think she realizes that even though she thought she belonged somewhere else, the fact that she always finds a reason to stay means Absaroka is where she’s supposed to be. Her and Zach settle into a life together, eventually having at least one kid, and maybe Zach eventually becomes Sheriff??
Ferg/Meg – Happily Ever After!!!

Walt definitely has to come back to be sheriff again. Cady Longmire being sheriff really makes no sense. She has no police experience, and why would Walt send his only daughter into a job where she would have the potential each day to get shot and killed. Very out of character.
Henry is a good guy but criminals will try to infiltrate the casino–which he and Walt will have to deal with. Lots of potential there, and now that Mathias and Walt have become allies, it would be nice to see Mathias more often.
Nighthorse wasn’t killed, so he can be brought back in some way. Zach is the new deputy, and that fits well.
I’m just not sure what you do about Vic and Walt’s relationship. They can’t work together once they’re a couple–unless they’ve broken up, which would be an unsatisfying end to their relationship. That would take some creativity, because they kind of painted themselves into a box in the last episode with that. I want to see Walt and Vic still working together, because I love their teamwork. But I also want them to care about each other and be close friends.
I’ve got it! Walt becomes mayor and Vic becomes sheriff. Now THAT has some interesting possibilities–because even as mayor you know Walt is gonna be doing police work.
