Chicago Med season 3 on set: Colin Donnell sets up some big medical cases

Colin Donnell

What on Chicago Med will ever top the panda? This is a question that we often ponder, mostly because of the fact that the panda operation remains one of the most unusual medical cases ever on the show. It was a huge test for Dr. Connor Rhodes — especially with such high stakes at the time and so many eyeballs watching. He conquered that, but it’s going to be pretty hard for the show to get to that level of shocking again.

Or … is it? The Chicago Med writers do challenge themselves and while we were at One Chicago Day last month, CarterMatt asked Colin Donnell the very same question we led off this article with. Does he think that they are going to be able to top the panda? He did offer up some instances that may come close during season 3 — whether or not the match it probably remains to be seen, at least in our book:

“There are two surgeries, actually. One happens in the field where Connor and Ava go out to do a rescue in the field. It was really amazing. We got to play with some fun toys. We have another one coming up where we got to work with an unbelievable guest star who joined us — I don’t think I can say who it was, but he was incredible. It was a fascinating surgery — there was only one case in the world. It’s awesome.”

“The panda really is [still] at the top of the list! I remember walking in one of the first days that we were working with the panda and I thought it was just a suit [with no body]. I was standing across the room and I saw him turn his head and move his arms and start talking. I was like ‘what the …’ — there was actually a person in there!”

In referencing Ava, Donnell is referring to Dr. Ava Bekker (new series regular Norma Kuhling), who debuted at the end of season 2 as a prominent doctor and professional rival to Dr. Rhodes. You will see the two at odds during the premiere, and potentially many times along the way after that. If you do want to know a little bit more about her, rest assured that on Sunday CarterMatt will offer more insight from Kuhling herself about the character.
