Hawaii Five-0 season 8 premiere video: Meet Meaghan Rath’s Tani Rey

Meaghan Rath's Tani Rey

Are you ready to see the debut of Meaghan Rath’s Tani Rey on the Hawaii Five-0 season 8 premiere Friday night? If so, CarterMatt has another preview of what to expect!

The video below (via TVLine) is the first footage we’ve seen of Rath in action as her new character, who is McGarrett’s new pick to join the Task Force based on some of her history as one of the best potential Police Academy recruits of the past several years. Why hasn’t she been scooped up? That has a thing or two to do with the fact that she didn’t actually finish her academy training after getting into an altercation and flunking the test. She wasn’t typical police material, but that doesn’t mean that she is anything less than a perfect fit to work for the Hawaii five-0 task force. She is ambitious, tough, and she’s not afraid to break the rules (clearly) in order to get the desired result.

Unfortunately, there is one particular issue when it comes to McGarrett’s plans to use Tani for his latest case, one that involves her going undercover at a college campus in order to locate a mysterious, dangerous hacker: She may not be interested in doing it. When they find her she is working as a lifeguard, and seems to be concerned that she’s not Five-0 material. She doesn’t say it, but there’s clearly some self-doubt going on here … understandable, given everything that she’s gone through and also that this job offer is coming so out of the blue for her.

She’s not ready to say yes to the gig at the end of the preview, but remember this: Rath is a series regular on the season. One way or another, she’s going to get a chance to be a part of this world and the story. We do love that Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) is referenced in the preview; after all, his departure is going to leave a gaping hole in the show. It’s nice to see that the tone around his exit is celebratory. While McGarrett would’ve loved to keep him, Chin obviously has the talent and the skill to lead his own Task Force in a city like San Francisco. Clearly there is no ill will towards Chin for taking that job, and Steve looks at it almost as inspirational. He hopes that some other people take advantage of this opportunity to sign up for the Task Force, build up their resume, and then go off to do great things. It doesn’t matter so much if those great things are either here or in a different city so long as they are happening.
