Shadowhunters season 3: The wait for Lilith casting

Lilith

There’s some good news and bad news when it comes to Shadowhunters season 3. The character of Lilith has been cast!

Now … we share the bad news: You’re going to be waiting for a little while still to learn who is playing her. In a new post on Twitter, show executive producer Todd Slavkin confirmed that the show has brought on board the performer behind their new Big Bad, but declined to say who it will be. The hashtag of “expect the unexpected” makes us think that it’s probably not someone you would expect — or, that it is Big Brother host Julie Chen, who often uses “expect the unexpected” as a catch-phrase. (Of course, we’re kidding about it being her. It’s not.)

Typically, the way that major castings work is that you wait until the network releases some official statement, or they give the story out to a major outlet to report. (For the record, we volunteer if anyone over at Freeform is listening!)

The character of Lilith is going to be hugely significant to the Shadowhunters story for a wide array of different reasons. We don’t want to give anything away, but she clearly has ties to Jonathan and is also incredibly dangerous. She’s also different than any adversary that the Institute has faced off against before. Every season with a show like this, you want to see a villain who is more challenging than the next. You therefore want Lilith to be every bit as dangerous as either Jonathan or Valentine, but to bring some of her own components to the table and reasons to fear her in some sort of terrible way. She needs to be sneaky, calculating, and bloodthirsty. Basically, we want her to be someone who there is legitimate fear around, since the Shadowhunters were often fairly bold around Valentine when you consider just how dangerous the man’s supposed to be.

Why there is no need to rush the announcement

Shadowhunters season 3 is not going to be premiering until January 2018 most likely on Freefrom (read more here), so the show probably does not need to force things along at some sort of rapid pace. What they do need to remember, though, is that this is the sort of show with fans interested enough in the story that they will hang out around the Toronto set and look to take photos. Sooner or later, someone is going to find out about this casting, and ideally you would like to be able to report on it before someone comes in and swoops you in this regard. We feel like they will make that announcement in plenty of time; we’re just looking forward to dissecting it when we get an opportunity to do just that.
