Beyond Suits season 7, what’s the USA series’ lifespan?

Suits season 7 will be premiering on USA in just a matter of days, and we are firmly at the point in the series’ run now where there are questions. Some of the network’s longest-running shows, whether it be Monk, Psych, or Burn Notice, have lasted a grand total of eight seasons. Meanwhile, this is a show that has already tied together one of its biggest loose ends: Mike pretending to be a lawyer. He’s already done time for it and can’t be retried for that; he’s also back at the firm, so everything seems done when it comes to that.

In terms of its cast, Suits has already experienced its first major change there with Gina Torres departing as a regular — the longer the show lasts, the more likely it is that there will be more. It’s hard to keep groups of people together forever, and we don’t want to see the show stick around so long that it doesn’t feel like the same show anymore.

With that in mind, we have to imagine that the show is already thinking about what the endgame could be, even if we’re not there just yet. There are sixteen episodes this season, and given that it hasn’t been announced as the final one, there may be hope for a season 8 beyond this. Whenever the final season is here, we hope that it’s announced in advance. If you remember, the final season for Psych was not confirmed until halfway through the season, and that proved to be rather problematic in that the end of the show felt rushed. We don’t want to see that happen here.

Is the show doing enough in terms of its ratings to stay around? Probably, but in terms of live+same-day numbers, this is a little bit of a shell of its former self. Season 6 averaged a 0.4 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down about 20% versus the season before. The good news is that it remains super-popular in terms of both DVR viewing and streaming, so there is clearly enough of a demand for it to last for a while.

Why ask these questions about the future now?

There are two reasons. First, the season 7 premiere is a mere number of days away, and everyone has to be asking these questions now. Also, we’re doing this with most shows this month courtesy of our TV Lifespan series.

Will Suits season 7 be the show’s last?

We’ve got our fears, but for now, we’re going to say “no” and hope that there will be a chance in due time to see an eighth season. With a Gina Torres spin-off and with there still being some loose ends out there with Harvey / Donna and Louis Litt’s romantic life, there are still stories to tell.
