Beyond Hawaii Five-0 season 8, what is the series’ lifespan?
If this was a little over a week ago, there was no chance that we’d think that was the case — then, the news of losing both Grace Park and Daniel Dae Kim came in at one time. This is two cast members leaving in a single year, and they are two of the most-beloved people on the series. They’re the heart and soul of the ohana, and they were great ambassadors of the show.
It’s devastating to imagine the show without them, but alas, here we are. It’s not the fault of anyone who works on the show, so let’s get that out of the way right now. It’s all just CBS, and it’s to be seen how the show recovers this.
For the time being, though, there is still some hope for season 9 for a couple of different reasons…
1. The ratings – If the show does manage to keep most of the viewership that it had for the seventh season, it’s not going anywhere in the near future. Remember that season 7 actually held almost the entirety of its viewership in the 18-49 demographic, and this does spell some rather-great things for the show’s future. The problem is that this coming season, there will be inevitably some people who leave due to the cast changes. We’ll see how some of that shakes out.
2. International popularity – This is a show watched all over the world for many reasons, but we think one of the biggest ones is that it gives you a good bit of paradise and combines that with what so many people love about the crime procedural genre as a whole: Great mysteries chock full of interesting twists and turns. It gives you that sense of escapism, and that is universal no matter what the country is.
3. There have been no indications of it ending – We’ve certainly heard over time that this is the case, but there is another question worth asking now: Is this clouded in any way by Alex O’Loughlin potentially leaving at the end of the season? While that’s not official by any means, if that happens it would mean that Scott Caan would be the only surviving member of the team. That’s a tricky thing to consider for the show’s future.
Will season 8 be the show’s last?
We’re still writing from an emotional place, but we still hope not because of the remaining cast members and all of the producers / writers / crew members working on it. It’s possible that they will find some other great talent that meshes well with the existing cast. We’ll give season 8 a chance — that doesn’t mean that we’ll forget about Kono or Chin, but Hawaii Five-0 has been such a resource of great entertainment that the show is worth it.
