Agents of SHIELD season 4 finale: Is Aida gone? Coulson’s space travel
This finale could have served as a series finale had Marvel not made the decision to renew the show, so with that, it made sense that there was a rather generous amount of conclusiveness to the story.
For one, Ghost Rider is gone almost as quickly as he arrived. He decided to get rid of the Darkhold once and for all, and with that, he took off to a very different world using some of the powers that he’d developed since he was last around some of the other characters. While he was there, though, he teamed up with Coulson for a deal that allowed the Spirit of Vengeance to come through and kill Aida. He was one of the only people who could. Aida inflicted a lot of harm, but the majority of the main characters all survived her wrath.
Ultimately, it was Fitz who continues to wrestle with his grief more so than anything else given that he feels responsible for the LMDs and everything else. Nonetheless, the team all rallied around him. It seemed as though there was going to be a happy ending, and nobody was going to have all that much to worry about over the off-season.
Then, the mystery men arrived
A group found the SHIELD team in the midst of their celebratory dinner, where their various misdeeds over the course of the season caught up to them, and they were effectively frozen and displaced.
In the closing minutes, Coulson woke up after the arrest to find himself in … outer space? That’s his new home, but it’s not entirely clear just what he’s going to be doing there or if there’s a way to get out. This is as mysterious cliffhanger as you’re going to find, and it’s made all the more frustrating by the fact that season 5 is probably not going to be premiering on ABC until midseason. The show was left off of the fall schedule in favor of The Inhumans.
