Nicole Kidman still interested in Big Little Lies season 2
Speaking in a new interview with Variety, the actress (in the midst of promoting many upcoming projects at Cannes) made it clear precisely what it would take for her to come back to the show, which may or may not have a future depending on when the subject is discussed:
“If the storyline could be powerful and compelling. If there is a way to form these women’s lives further, that’s really interesting. It would be so lovely if we could do it.”
With original author Liane Moriarty thinking of possible ideas, this is a show with an open-ended future down the road. What is intriguing about its possible return at present is that this is not a show HBO does not necessarily need to make. There will be pressing, sudden demand for it. If there is a good idea that comes together, the show more than likely will in turn. However, if there is no such idea, the network won’t rush it out there. This is the same philosophy that exists out there with a multitude of their properties, whether it be something like The Night Of or True Detective. This is also why HBO is currently looking at five different Game of Thrones spin-off ideas — they won’t be putting all five on the air unless they are all one-off prequels, but they want to see different suggestions for what the show is and what the show can become.
If Big Little Lies season 2 does happen, odds are that it won’t be until 2019 or even later. Go ahead and take stock of the show in the back of your mind, and remember that if a renewal is announced, it will probably be back in due time. It may just require a little bit of patience to get to that point. Clearly, the discussion about the renewal possibility is not slowing down.
