Ratings Bubble Report: Does ‘Lucifer’ on Fox deserve a season 3?

When we’re talking about personal preferences, “Lucifer” on Fox is precisely the sort of show that we enjoy watching. It does a great job with some of its various cases and mysteries, but does not make the show solely about those. Instead, it injects a wide array of different things such as humor, romance, mythology, and a wide array of interesting characters. It also effectively combines some of its procedural elements into a larger story, one that offers an incentive to watch every week as opposed to whenever you feel like it.

Now, let’s take preference out the window. Based on performance alone, is it a show the deserves a third season on the air? We’d argue yes, and for a wide array of different reasons.

Consistency – Since the premiere drew a 1.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic, every single episode has drawn between a 1.0 and 1.1 rating. The only exception was Halloween, and that’s understandable for some obvious reasons. Having that level of consistency at a time when there isn’t always that much is a valuable thing, and it shows that these viewers are going to continue to stick with the show no matter where you air it or when. (Remember, we’re only talking live+same day ratings; the show gets so many more viewers watching after the fact.)

Fan support – It’s one thing to average a 1.1 rating with a lukewarm following; it’s another thing when the following is extremely passionate. You can see them being vocal online and doing everything that they can to support the show. You don’t get that with the majority of network shows out there.

The potential – Think about the idea of the show itself, the source material, and everything that’s been covered so far with Chloe, Charlotte, and many of the other characters. There’s so much more that can be done with this show; with the mythology here being precisely what it is, you give yourself a lot of room to play around.

The cast – You’ve got great leads in Tom Ellis and Lauren German, and then you add to that an exceptional supporting cast and a sci-fi icon in Tricia Helfer joining the show this year. These are the sort of people you want to keep working with, no?

The drawback – It’s true that ratings are down in comparison to the first season. However, there are some things to remember here. The 1.5 average that it drew in the demo for season 1 was significantly front-loaded by early episodes, and it also had a very strong lead-in courtesy of “The X-Files” in the early going. Having that sort of lead-in is a huge asset when launching and maintaining a show. Given its performance since, we don’t feel as though the show should be significantly penalized over a year-to-year decline is that big a deal.

Fox has until May to decide for certain what they want to do with “Lucifer.” While we’re optimistic about its future, we advice you to continue to watch the show live, support it online, and encourage many of your friends and fellow fans to do the same thing.
