‘Quantico’ episode 20 review: Alex and Ryan’s rollercoaster; is Drew ‘the voice’?

If there is one thing that we can say with the utmost certainty about Alex and Ryan of “Quantico” fame after watching Sunday night’s new episode, it is that “it’s complicated” may be their relationship status for the rest of their entire lives.

In one timeline, we got a nice little monologue from Ryan about how meeting Alex caused him to rethink things in his life; meanwhile, in the other the two are fighting brutality after she looked for answers in his computer, and eventually trapped him before running away. Quite the dichotomy, right? Well, things went from bad to worse as Alex, in following orders, ended up implicating Ryan as the terrorist without even knowing it.

While Ryan is the one in the spotlight, a text message may have actually told us the truth: Drew is involved … DEEPLY involved. Maybe he is the mastermind looking for revenge after what happened to him at Quantico, but we’re still willing to bet it’s more complicated than this. Remember that there are still two more episodes to go in this season!

Elsewhere in the “present,” Shelby finally learned the truth regarding her parents, and precisely what Caleb was willing to do in order to convince her that they were not terrible people. She decided that she didn’t want to be with someone who wrote fake letters supposedly from her parents to keep on the ruse. Now, she wants to bring her parents to justice once and for all. Nimah and Rayna also got their first mission following their time in the academy, but it’s different than they expected.

We’re not going to say that we loved every single minute of this episode, largely because Ryan and Alex are better when they are not surrounded by as much will-they-or-won’t-they. This show is better when it’s not romantic, and we’d rather characters just be together rather than fluttering back and forth. As for the Drew reveal and the closing scene with Priyanka Chopra, those were pretty darn excellent. Episode Grade: B.
