John Oliver, Stephen Colbert look back at ‘Donald Drumpf’ saga
For a good few days earlier this year, you could almost no go anywhere without hearing about Donald Drumpf in one way or another. Why is that? You don’t have to look any further than “Last Week Tonight with John Oliver,” which aired what may very well be one of the most brilliant segments in the history of the show. It was a masterful throughline that began with Oliver commenting on Trump’s diatribe against Jon Stewart some time ago, before ultimately getting to the reveal that Trump’s ancestral last name was Drumpf and that he should be proud of it more so than anything else.
In a segment on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” earlier this week, the two hosts (who are, fittingly, both alumni from “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart”) went through precisely everything that had befallen in the weeks that followed the segment airing. Here are a few surprises.
1. More than 30,000 of the hats, which Oliver sold at cost, ended up being sold
2. There was a point that Oliver didn’t think he was going to really have to dive into discussing Trump at all on his show.
3. Jay-Z apparently asked through his people for one of the hats, which Oliver joked about by saying that if he was to go out in it in public, HBO was going to need to make a whole lot more of them.
What remains perhaps the most interesting to us about all of this is that Trump is typically someone who commentates on virtually anything and everything; however, on this particular occasion, he opted not to do anything of the sort. He was strangely silent.
