Starz CEO met with TV Academy after ‘Outlander’ Emmy snub
We were right there with many “Outlander” fans when we were hoping to see the show nominated in some capacity earlier this summer with the Emmys. We thought that the acting was brilliant, and the series itself had at least a fighting chance as an underdog.
However, it just did not happen, and the show once again found itself in a spot that Starz knows very well already at this point: No man’s land. Despite being more and more successful as a home for original programming, they just cannot seem to get over the hump when it comes to significant recognition from the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences. It is hard sometimes to get people to see things differently; Emmy voters are often stubborn, and even behind the times when it comes to new trends in programming. It took them three years to recognize someone in Tatiana Maslany who has been brilliant since the first episode of “Orphan Black.”
Chris Albrecht is the man responsible for bringing “Outlander” and many other Starz shows on the air, and with that we have learned thanks to a Fortune interview that he met with some TV Academy executives after the “Outlander” snub. This is apparently what they told them:
“They said they had 140 dramas were submitted … I said, ‘How possibly could this group choose seven best nominees from 140 programs?’ They certainly didn’t see 140 programs. The Emmys is not a meritocracy. It’s a game. A political game.”
Do we agree? We don’t want to say that we think the process is completely a “game,” but there are politics involved and part of the challenge is finding a way to make sure that the Academy knows who you are. Maybe that will happen come season 2…
