‘Fear the Walking Dead’ spoilers: Show boss on relationship aspect

fear -Throughout the past month or so we have analyzed AMC’s “Fear the Walking Dead” in a variety of different contexts, but the vast majority of them have been through the lens of the original flagship show. That is where most of the popularity lies, and with this one coming in after fives seasons of the original there is a lot to live up to.

However, we probably have not done the premise of this show in some ways justice. The focus here is on Madison (Kim Dickens) and Travis (Cliff Curtis), two people who love each other, and have been through a lot even before the zombie apocalypse hits. This is another test of their relationship, and this show is going to mark a chance to see how this couple starts to change and build over time. It’s certainly a very different dynamic than what we saw with Rick and Lori on the original show.

“Sons of Anarchy” vet Dave Erickson is one of the architects behind this show alongside Robert Kirkman, and he tells Entertainment Weekly a little about the emotional groundwork that has been laid for these characters:

“For Madison and Travis, the goal was to establish a strong couple. They’re not married yet: He’s divorced, her first husband passed away several years ago, and the idea is they have the quality of soul-mates. They met each other, they’re strong for each other, they compliment each other in the best way. What I love about that is that it’s taking this very fundamentally sound relationship and then seeing how the apocalypse changes that. Seeing how our personalities begin to evolve as time passes in the face of this. I think they’re very understanding of each other’s flaws, and what’s interesting is to take the normal complications that exist in a good relationship and then put them under intense strain and see how each of the characters react.”
