‘Arrow’ season 3 spoilers: Don’t take Black Canary costume as proof of anything for Laurel…
When the costume was first revealed for Laurel Lance as Black Canary on “Arrow,” there were almost two separate reactions to it. The first one was for those who were talking about the costume, and then the other was the reaction from those who felt like she was donning the new look a little bit too quickly.
Let’s start here by discussing that: Are those people right? We certainly understand the motivation for discussing it. Personally, it comes down to what the philosophy really is for those working behind the scenes on the show. If this costume automatically entitled her to be as amazing as Sara Lance, it’s undisputed to us that this would be a terrible move.
Luckily, we have further reassurance now that Katie Cassidy’s character still has some work to do, regardless of whatever costume she is wearing. Just look at what executive producer Marc Guggenheim said to Entertainment Weekly on the subject:
“Just because you put on a mask and a costume doesn’t mean you’re a superhero … A mask does not a hero make. We’re really at the beginning of Laurel’s journey to becoming the Black Canary, not the end by virtue of the fact that she’s put on a costume.”
There is a series of three episodes airing early next year that are almost going to be a trilogy all about the Black Canary story, and get us closer to understanding how Laurel really decides to go all-out with the costume. Hopefully, this wins over some of the people who have been a little hard on her this season. She has gotten much better!
