‘How I Met Your Mother’ season 9, episode 13 review: Did The Mother meet Ted?
Tonight on “How I Met Your Mother,” we had the return of The Mother, and apparently also the arrival of The Devil. In what was a particularly memorable guest spot, Andrew Rannells (“The New Normal”) came on the show as Darren, a guy whose sole objective was basically to become fast friends with everyone he meets, learn their insecurities, and then slowly start to destroy them and everything that they cared about.
When it comes to the secrets that this gang was keeping close to them, that was big trouble. Robin had some issues of Lily wanting to move to Italy, and she also sided with Marshall on the issue of him getting the judge appointment in New York City. This all led to a heated, nasty confrontation for the two to sort through their problems; but whenever they started to move forward, he found a way to come into their lives again and ruin things.
But this was not even the biggest stunner that came out thanks to Darren, as Ted had to explain to Barney that he was moving to Chicago … and why he needed a fresh start there. He didn’t really have to say that Robin was involved for Barney to realize it. It feels almost now like going into the second half of the season that everyone is on the same page somewhat; after being in the car with The Mother, and hearing all about Darren for the first time, Marshall and Lily had a somewhat-happy reunion. (Yay!)
The big moment that made us smile even in the midst of all the sad moments was seeing Ted, after proving his friendship to Barney by stealing a bottle of uber-expensive scotch, punching Darren in the face. Why? He broke the bottle in the middle of ruining other people’s lives, and Ted also realized just what Darren did to his friendship. In the process, he made The Mother happy as he tried to kick her out of her own band … and while the two have not met yet, The Mother still ended up buying him a drink of a scotch that was even tastier.
In the end, “Bass Player Wanted” was fun, moving, and just all around exciting. Overall, the best of the ninth season so far. Grade: A-.
