Matthew Perry set to star in possible ‘The Odd Couple’ remake for CBS
Is Matthew Perry really this intent on trying to get a new show off the ground? We at least admiring him for sticking to his guns, and putting out a new show every couple of years. He first tried this after “Friends” with “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” and it didn’t really go anywhere (even though it was fantastic). Following that up, he also had “Mr. Sunshine” and “Go On,” with neither one of them lasting longer than a full series. (The latter’s cancellation was somewhat of a surprise, given that he had a great premiere opportunity after the Olympics that never really went anywhere).
But now, the actor is going to try to revive one of the greatest comedy projects of all time in “The Odd Couple.” Perry is set to star as Oscar in the pilot, which he will also write and executive producer with Danny Jacobson. At the moment, there is no one attached to say Felix (though we’re pretty sure that someone is going to start clamoring for David Schwimmer at any given moment). This is coming from CBS Television Studios, which makes them almost a de facto favorite to get the series since they have the first-look rights.
Personally, we see why CBS would love to give this a chance. Remakes and adaptations have done well for them over the years, and with the right actors, they can keep a show on the air for a while. But the comedies for them this year have to be seen as a disappointment. Save for “The Big Bang Theory” and “How I Met Your Mother,” nothing has brought in close to a 3.0 rating in the 18-49 demo in weeks. Also, new series “The Millers” and “The Crazy Ones” have slipped mightily since they first started. “Mom” has been a disappointment, and “We Are Men” was practically canceled the second it premiered.
