MTV’s ‘Awkward’ season 3, episode 19 review: Did Matty ask Jenna to prom?

The latest -Tonight’s episode of “Awkward” lasted for a full hour as we prepare for the big arrival of prom, and while there was a major victory for Jenna Hamilton, it probably was not exactly what she expected.

Let us start here with what has to be the good news when it comes to Jenna: She found a way to get Valerie Marks back as the guidance counselor. It was quite an interesting sequence of events to watch unfold, as she had to have a hearing, which led to Jenna’s mom pretending to be her lawyer like it was an episode of “Law & Order,” and this led to Sadie actually making some sort of passionate pleas to keep her around in some capacity. Personally, we found parts of this rather moving, and it was the best part of the episode from the standpoint of just getting to see Valerie be completely unhinged and work in a liquor store for a little while after she was dismissed from the show.

As for the prom story / Ming’s latest run-in with the Asian mafia … they were a little more mixed. Everything with Jenna was making some sense, as she was starting to feel for Matty again, but his move to ask Bailey to prom instead was so predictable. She has shown up for some reason, and there was no other explanation for keeping her around. The only thing that truly made this hysterical for us was merely seeing Jenna, dressed in a prom dress, try to have a sit-down conversation with Matty about something that really had nothing to do with her at all.

While we don’t believe that this needed to be a full hour, “Awkward” was still fun. While it was predictable, at least the show found a way to adequately fit in the cracks. Grade: B-.
