Mary J. Blige performs National Anthem before Thanksgiving NFL contest

CBS -Earlier in the day, we had an opportunity to hear a performance from none other than Jackie Evancho prior to the start of the NFL contest between the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers; and following that (later this afternoon) in Dallas, Mary J. Blige appeared on CBS in order to lead off the game between the Dallas Cowboys and the Oakland Raiders.

The National Anthem has become such a tradition before sporting events, but there has become another stranger layer to it, as well: Trying to gauge the performances of every anthem singer, given that there have been some pretty shocking ones over the years. But by and large, Blige gave a strong performance of the anthem that was  pretty much what you would expect from her. There was one point in which she seemed to pause over one of the words, but it didn’t turn out to be very problematic in the end. She still has one of the greatest and most distinct voices in almost all of her soul / R&B genre.

For CBS or Fox (depending on the broadcaster), they always attempt to make this annual game featuring the Cowboys into some sort of grand event. This includes getting a star to perform the National Anthem, having another big act at halftime, and then using the show to focus on the holiday season all around the country. This is the official start of the Christmas shopping season, and for our friends practicing Judaism tonight marks the start of Hanukkah.

In going back to Blige’s performance of the anthem, what did you think about it; also, do you think it was as strong as she has performed the album over the years? Be sure to share some of your thoughts below! We have some more coverage of all things Thanksgiving just take a look at the link here. We’ll have a video of the performance as soon as it is available.
