‘American Idol XIII’ spoilers: Contestants reportedly given updated song list

The logo -If the information that is out there right now about “American Idol XIII” actually translates well to watching the show next year, we do not know if we will be able to contain our excitement. To this day, there are a number of things that we would argue that the show does better than any other show, whether it is make stars or show us a real progression between an audition and actually getting to stand on stage at the finale. But what they have done terribly wrong for years is continuing to stand behind a list of songs that has been beaten down into dirt.

According to Mjsbigblog, however, contestants were sent out an email for Hollywood Week with what looks to be an updated list of songs. Rather than tunes that are stuck in around 1971, the music that they can choose from this time will be much more contemporary, and feature songs from the last 20 years. Does this mean the end for “Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word,” “Alone,” and “Against All Odds”? Unfortunately, we won’t be completely satisfied until Whitney Houston’s “I Have Nothing,” our pick for the most overdone song ever between all major singing shows, is removed … and it was recorded first in the early nineties.

This is one of those changes that we’re hopeful about for now, but we can’t really see how it manifests until Fox actually puts Hollywood Week on the air. Remember that contestants have a role in this as well, and some may have actually fallen in love with songs that they’ve heard on the show before and choose to do again. We would advise, though, for originality, since most of the time the repeat performances never live up to the first time that a “moment” was had with the song. Allison Iraheta is the only singer who has done “Alone” in a way that compares to Carrie Underwood, and while Matthew Schuler on “The Voice” did “Hallelujah” proud, Jason Castro still owns the song from the “American Idol” vantage point. Don’t try to follow those up.

So we’re excited … for now, just like we are excited with the judges … for now. After this show has smashed our TV-loving heart into piece before (see past judges), it’s hard to really be that optimistic.
