‘Masters of Sex’ episode 8 spoilers: Masters and Johnson prepare for a presentation
As Virginia Johnson puts in the latest sneak peek for Sunday night’s “Masters of Sex” episode, there is nothing less exciting than standing in front of a room and reading off all sorts of various statistics related to the findings in Dr. William Masters’ sex study. However, this may really be the only way to present their findings to an array of professionals who may or may be that excited to hear what is being said here.
First of all, you have to remember here the time period; this is the 1950s, and while there are clearly a number of people taking part in some pretty scandalous things, few ever want them revealed to the public. This is also the age where you can still have all sorts of secrets, but not have the public know about any of them. The internet’s still not around, and cities are popular enough that not everyone knows everyone else. So even though people may be having sex, they don’t want to hear about it in a professional setting.
Virginia suggests in the clip that there could be some other ways in which to try to get the audience interested, but as Masters points out, it’s not exactly like you can have a live demonstration on anything. The only real hope is that you capture the attention of your colleagues, and that they take your word for all of the findings that you uncover. While there will of course be others out there to prove the theory, someone has to come up with it in the first place. Given that we already know how this story ends, Masters obviously does a pretty good job.
Of course, we would be remiss to sit here and shy away from mentioning that Masters and Johnson are wearing robes. Clearly, they are still participating in their part of the study in full force, as Bill seems to have his “relationship” with his wife back on track. (We take this to mean that he has found a way to pretend like he is really interested in being with her.)
