‘Saturday Night Live’ preview: Why Lady Gaga faces huge expectations

Usually when you have a first-time host coming on “Saturday Night Live” for a show, the one thing that we really hope for above all else is simply that they go out, perform, and are not completely horrible in the process. But when it comes to Lady Gaga, we legitimately feel like she is in somewhat of a different boat. She may be new to the hosting gig, but she is hardly new to the show. She has appeared both as a musical guest in in a few sketches, and at least knows a little bit about what this show is.

So we feel almost like Gaga herself has created huge expectations for this to be a top 3 show of the show, and she really needs it to be. This is someone who prides herself on being a performer of all sorts. She has experience acting, and she also has a knack for making fun of herself in the right context.

The biggest issue that we see Gaga having? Knowing that she doesn’t have to even take something as silly as self-humiliation seriously. She comes across as calculated so often, and we want to see her loosen up, and allow some of that excited little girl she was watching the show decades ago come out in some of the sketches. Do some impressions! Dress like a normal person! Get a few of your famous friends to show up. Both she and “SNL” know that this is a big episode with the November sweeps happening and with Thanksgiving coming soon, and we fully believe that they will try whatever possible to make things work.

When it comes to the ratings, meanwhile, we don’t know for sure that this is going to be the highest-rated show of the season or not. Like Miley Cyrus, Gaga is very divisive. But also, we think that like Miley, Gaga is underestimated sometimes when it comes to her ability to make people laugh in the right context.
