‘Glee’ season 5, episode 5 review: Lea Michele, tattoos, and Marley – Jake drama
We have a hard time knowing where to even start when it comes to Thursday’s “Glee” episode, mostly because this was, in a word, ridiculous. “The End of Twerk” was not an easy episode to like, mostly because it accomplished next to nothing when it comes to the long-term story.
The only real productive moment of this whole ordeal came with the realization that Kurt and Rachel are still getting over Finn’s death, which led to a mini-rebellion that included the two visiting a tattoo parlor, Kurt getting inked up, and then also piercing his tongue. Rachel told Kurt that she actually didn’t get a tattoo, but the reality here is that she did. It’s a tiny piece of ink with the word “Finn” written on her torso. There are surely going to be questions when it came to whether or not Lea Michele actually got this tattoo, but for now it’s best to not assume anything.
But unfortunately, the rest of the episode was stuck dealing with McKinley High. There are times when we consider this part of the story to be immature and almost embarrassing. Can you imagine what Matthew Morrison, Broadway veteran and a guy with an album of standards, felt about twerking to “Blurred Lines” at a high school? The entire sight of some of these characters doing this dance move was just awful. Seeing that Marley – Jake breakup? Also annoying, since everyone could see that coming from the moment he hooked up with that terrible baby Santana / Quinn clone Bree.
One other case for McKinley going away at this point is so that we can actually have the New York actors all in one episode again. Can you believe there was no Santana here? Seeing no Adam Lambert or Demi Lovato was understandable, but it made no sense for Santana to not be around her roommates as they want through their little rebellion.
The meaningful stuff with Kurt and Rachel really doesn’t make up for the 40 or so minutes of McKinley, which is so cliched and dull now that it no longer holds any magic. While we like Blake Jenner and some of the other characters, we still think that the show should have just shifted focus at the end of season 3. Grade: D+.

I always try to not rip on a show I like because well, the writers are working extremely hard especially with the difficulty of losing Cory but, the portable toilet in the choir room? That was kinda jumping the shark…and blurred lines/twerking as a lesson by a teacher? Inappropriate. Loved the look into not only Rachel’s grief but more into Kurts…It’s something I’ll follow very closely having lost a sibling myself three years ago.
I kind of found this episode the opposite of last week, in that being yourself was the theme tonight, and last week it was being something you’re not….but I suspect they meant it as stepping out of your comfort zone and being diverse. However it came off as be different not you. I’m super disappointed about the Jake/Bree affair thing….so stupid, I thought Jake used to be an angry kid…not a player…I thought his characterization was silly the last two episodes…he’s not been written to be someone who just cheats because his gf isn’t ready for sex…at least that’s not the impression I got.
I liked the performances a lot! Melissa really owned wrecking ball vocally though I’d of done a scene not so reminiscent of the actually wrecking ball video. Loved Alex Newell’s performance as well. And Darren Criss, boy can work that twerk!
Also, I had a super guilty pleasure in seeing kurt shed the shirt ;) Colfer’s a sweetheart! inside and out!
