‘Glee’ season 5 song spoilers: Where we talk Will’s inclusion in ‘Blurred Lines’

Matthew Morrison -Over the past couple of days, we’ve been building up to talk about what has to be one of the most awkward, uncomfortable “Glee” performances that we’ve probably ever had on the show: “Blurred Lines.” This is a song that will be included in Thursday night’s “The End of Twerk,” and we’re sure that it will get almost everyone talking who pays attention to the lyrics.

We should really start this off by saying the following: We don’t find it particularly problematic that the show is singing “Blurred Lines” itself. It’s a hugely popular song, and anyone who thinks that high schoolers probably are not out there singing and twerking to this song are out of their minds and have their head buried so deep into the sand that they can probably see the earth’s core. But why include Matthew Morrison’s Will in here? We don’t think that there’s anything awful or ill-intentioned going on here, and it may even make sense in the context of the episode. It’s just that as a cover on its own, it’s a little icky and of course the sort of thing no real teacher would get away with.

As for the cover itself, it’s a little disappointing just in that it is such a straightforward cover of the original Robin Thicke hit with T.I. and Pharrell Williams. While both Morrison and Kevin McHale have voices designed to pull off some of the high notes, why not try to change this up at least a little bit. While we don’t really care about it at all, we’re surprised that the show kept the b-word in the song, given that they often edit swearing out of some of the other covers that they do. Even on some radio edits, the word is replaced with “girl.” But, like we suggested earlier, do you think that high school students are really singing the world “girl” there? Doubtful.

Do you think this is one of those “Glee” songs that really just should have been avoided, or do you think this will make way more sense when the episode is out?
