‘Pretty Little Liars’ season 4 spoilers: Check out Troian Bellisario, Keegan Allen in noir episode
Just in case you loved “Pretty Little Liars” showing off its spooky side courtesy of a Halloween special, or having fun with the more sparse color palette seemingly available in Ravenswood, you’re going to love the opportunity to see this: The show choose to head in a film noir sort of direction with a tribute to some of your favorite old-school mysteries. This should be pretty fun, at least if the picture of Troian Bellisario and Keegan Allen to the left here is any indication.
This picture (first posted by TV Guide) does at least do a solid job of presenting us something that really feels almost like “Mad Men” if Don Draper and company decided to also go black-and-white. Spencer and Toby suddenly do not even look like teenagers; instead, they are these sort of mature gumshoes looking to solve a mystery.
In speaking about the decision to even do this episode in the first place, executive producer Joe Dougherty told the website that it came about largely due to the network being impressed with the sort of visual tricks that the show has been able to pull off already:
“ABC Family noticed what we were doing visually on the show, going for very noirlike effects, and asked if we wanted to go all the way and make something special in black and white … We had to test the wardrobe to see what everything would look like … What stands out for me is how the four Liars carry their personalities into this new world.”
This episode airs on February 11, and while we think that it looks beyond cool, we hope that this is not a vessel for some of the show’s more significant reveals such as Aria learning the truth about Ezra and his involvement in the “A” universe. Those are twists that we don’t need to be diluted by the sort of thing as seeing characters in a slightly-augmented dimension.
