‘American Horror Story’ season 4: Kathy Bates, Angela Bassett asked to return

The latest -While it’s certainly unusual to hear about possible casting news midway through a third season of the show, that’s the way of “American Horror Story” for you. The show was recently renewed by FX for a fourth season, and thanks to that Ryan Murphy obviously wants to waste no time in trying to figure out what actors and characters he wants to usher in to the world of the show next.

Two people that he wants to for sure have around next year? Kathy Bates and Angela Bassett. The two prolific actress have been asked to return next year, and according to Murphy’s comments to Entertainment Weekly, they would like to come back based on the quality of the work that they have done this time around:

“I have approached them and they wanna do it … That’s very exciting when you can work with A.) actresses you’ve always idolized and B.) those two are loving this season. They love what they get to do. Kathy Bates sent the writers a basket of plush toys all in the shapes of disemboweled organs. It doesn’t get better than when an Oscar winner sends you a grab bag of stuffed pancreas to say ‘Thank you and job well done.’”

After reading this, Kathy Bates sounds like one of the coolest people to have on your set ever. She works hard for you, delivers great performances, and then delivers weird gifts. What remains extremely impressive to us about what Murphy has done with this show is that he has taken great actors, even though many of who may not be particularly well-known for their work by young audiences, and then makes them appeal to a pretty young crowd. The only question we have is how in the world he is going to continue to find great parts for so many different people year after year, especially since we assume that many of his other favorites are also going to be asked back in some way.

As we reported with that initial announcement, the new season will once again be 13 episodes. The only difference between this and past years is that the theme may actually be revealed at the end of this season. That was at least something that Murphy was tooling around with.
