‘NCIS’ season 11, episode 5 preview: Is Michael Weatherly back in the spotlight?
Do you want more Tony on “NCIS”? Well you are going to get plenty of that and then some on next week’s all-new episode “Once a Crook.”
Tonight in our review for “Anonymous Was a Woman,” we bemoaned that in leaving Tony back in Washington, it was more of a reminder that Ziva was gone. You had him held back and almost playing a supporting role, and we want more for Michael Weatherly. Luckily, this next episode is going to provide that. It will propel him back to some of his early days in Baltimore, and also bring back some memories of events that happened a very long time in the past. Want to read a little bit more about it? Before you do anything else, take a look at the synopsis (if you have not seen it already):
“DiNozzo returns to his Baltimore Police Department days when he sees a felony suspect from a 15-year-old case at the NCIS crime scene of a murdered Petty Officer.”
In case you have not heard already, Margo Harshman is also going to return in this episode as Delilah, McGee’s new girlfriend who squared off with Abby in some pretty funny scenes back during the premiere. Maybe this time around she’ll have more air time, but at least we know that she will be more intimately involved in the main case, which is sure to make some more waves between the characters.
As for the promo below, it definitely suggests that the trouble that Tony runs into is going to be of the emotional variety. Is he sick? Does he have Ziva on the brain? Is he tired of hearing about McGee’s love life? Maybe all of the above, but you are going to find out in just seven days’ time. Hopefully, this will be the hour that really gets the rest of the season back on track.

My rather extensive wish list for next week would be (and if not next week, then at least some time during season 11):
1. Further evidence of the brotherly bond between Tony and McGee.
2. Gibbs showing some concern for DiNozzo regarding whatever it is he is going through, or at least evidence of his respect for Tony. Since mid season 8 it’s hard to believe Gibbs even likes the guy. Half the time he looks at Tony like he’s crawled out from underneath a stone!
3. Gibbs calling DiNozzo “Tony”. He used to, quite a lot!
4. Tony standing up to Gibbs. A dramatic scene vis a vis the Gibbs / Franks basement scene last week would be amazing!
5. Lots of competent, serious Tony, with just a dollop of in-character smart humour.
6. Fewer head slaps – none next week – and then only when really justified, less harsh and delivered out of frustration, not with anger.
7. Tony in some serious jeopardy. The team spent a lot of time “getting lucky” in Season 10, ie, the explosion at NCIS HQ; the stunningly executed (well done sfx team!) Tiva car crash. I’d like to see one of the team, ideally Tony, getting significantly hurt sometime. No fallout = no jeopardy = unexciting!
8. Tony admitting how he really felt about Ziva. Despite her “almost” saying she loved him, he didn’t say anything in return.
9. Tony was looking for Ziva for several months, was all but hallucinating about her, now he’s back I’d like to see a little more emotion on his part.
10. Since it wasn’t addressed in episode 2, an idea of what Ziva said she was going to do: was she going to stay in Israel or maybe travel; whether she was going to stay in touch; if she gave Tony any idea of whether or not she would return not necessarily to DC but to the US.
11. The return of the DiNozzo beard!
12. And finally (and this definitely applies to the series as a whole) not leaving the big emotional moments to our “imagination”. For a good example of how to do it, see the final scenes of last night’s NCIS-LA, season 5, episode 4.

That is such a loaded question. Ziva of course. I would like to see Tony a little more emotional about losing her. Maybe trying to reach her occasionally. Situation as is is totally unrealistic.
