‘Bones’ season 9, episode 5 review: Cross this one off of your ‘bucket list’

Are Booth and Brennan finally set to tie the knot? That is what it looks like, at least based on what we saw at the end of tonight’s “Bones” season 9 episode. There was a new case to solve, but that was mostly superfluous; instead, what we want to focus on is the wedding planning that happened, and how there were a few little tidbits about these characters that we started to get to know over the course of this hour.

For one, who knew that Beckett had such a traditional bone (pun intended) in her body? There is a wedding dress that she has been wanting to wear since she was just eight years old, and she also wants to see Booth in a tuxedo. As the two of them started to discuss their own personal “bucket lists” (something that was brought on courtesy of the show’s central mystery), they wanted to really enjoy every second of the planning process rather than stress out over all of it as many couples seem to do.

One other addition this week that was not entirely welcome? Seeing more of Dr. Wells, who is basically the drama series version of Sheldon Cooper. He was around to stir things up in addition to VAL, the new system that was put into place at the Jeffersonian in order to help solve some murders. But at the end of the day, the system ended up doing nothing other than flopping like a fish out of water.

In the end this was a cute hour of television, and one that is more of a prelude than something that we are supposed to take as a standalone piece to the big picture. The only one concern we have is what happens when there is not a Pelant-type Big Bad out there, how the show will keep its drama intact. Luckily, this is where those reports of a new villain entering the picture should come into play.
