‘The X Factor’ UK results: Gary Barlow confirms exit; Lorna Simpson, Shelley Smith in danger

Take a look -Before we even get to the results of tonight’s “The X Factor” UK, let us start off here with an answer to a key question: Is Gary Barlow going to be leaving the show at the end of the season? As it turns out, it’s true.

As for why he decided to reveal his intentions while talking about Rough Copy, that’s a good question since it seems to be a little bit of a distraction from what was the actual performance itself. Then again, this is not nearly as egregious as the concept of a flash vote, which in our mind really benefits some of the acts who perform first. It also gives a huge advantage to the act who does receive the fewest amount of votes. Why? They get a full day to brace themselves for a sing-off, while the other act has to suddenly get their emotions together and perform live. (Maybe that adrenaline helps some people, but it certainly doesn’t help everyone.)

This voting basically turned the studio audience into a thunderdome, as everyone was screaming almost so loud that you could barely hear Mr. Tight Pants Dermot O’Leary speak to the contestants as time was running down.

The ultimate result here was only somewhat of a shock, as Shelley Smith received the lowest number of votes, and was put into the sing-off tomorrow. She actually sang rather well tonight, but suffered from a couple of simple problems:

1. Her personality can come across as fun to some, but grating / annoying to others. She also feels more like a stage singer than a pop singer.

2. She and Sam Bailey are fairly similar musically, and the votes were probably split to a certain degree. While we want to see Sharon’s ladies last for a while, we still think that it will be a mistake for her to not bring Joseph Whelan over either Shelley or Lorna Simpson to mix her category up a little bit.

Shelley will face off against the singer with the next-lowest amount of votes tomorrow night, and then the judges will have to make their decision.
