NBC’s ‘The Voice’ premiere preview: Matthew Schuler makes Christina Aguilera go insane

The latest -In her three seasons of “The Voice,” we don’t think we have ever seen Christina Aguilera fight as hard for a contestant as we do in the video below from tomorrow night’s premiere. In the clip, we meet a man named Matthew Schuler who is not only ambitious in taking on “Cough Syrup” by Young the Giant (one of our favorite songs from the past several years), but he has a pretty killer voice to go along with it.

We don’t know the frame-by-frame estimates here, but we would be willing to wager that Schuler may hold some sort of record now for being one of the fastest people to get all four people to turn around. He had literally just went about twelve beats into the song when everyone hit their buttons, and that’s impressive.

If we were him, we’d almost for-sure go with Christina just based on her enthusiasm. She stood up in her chair (while wearing heels), and she refused to let any other coach one-up her in any way. Given that there have been some times over the course of this series where she has seemed listless, this sort of enthusiasm is a good thing. Plus, his performance style is probably actually more in line with how she uses the stage than Blake Shelton, Cee Lo Green or Adam Levine. Adam also campaigns pretty hard to Matthew, while Blake for whatever reason makes the weird argument that he should be picked so that his wife will sleep with him later on.

Personally, we love Matthew’s audition simply because we’re almost desensitized at this point to actually liking singing-show contestants. We’ve just seen so many of them that we’ve come to hate a good many of them for just being ordinary. We’ll remember him, and if he continues to be this soulful / current while not doing predictable songs, he could win this whole thing.
