2013 Emmys: Elton John to perform Liberace medley; ‘Behind the Candelabra’ tie-in?
The Emmys are all about highlighting what is current in the world of television, and while we never really saw this coming, apparently what is current right now is the music of Liberace.
It was announced on Monday that Elton John will be performing at the annual awards show on September 22, and he will be taking on a medley of Liberace hits in the process. John is one of the most talented musicians / pianists out there, and from that standpoint alone, he seems like the right man to do some of these Liberace classics justice.
As for why in the word Liberace is suddenly current again, you can really give all of the credit there to HBO for “Behind the Candelabra.” This biopic-of-sorts was one of their most-successful TV movies in years, and it is also the favorite to sweep most of the Miniseries / TV Movie categories this year. Matt Damon and Michael Douglas are both nominated for their roles, as is the project as a whole. While this may be the Emmys tipping its cap towards the film as the most-popular entry, it’s hard to pass up an opportunity to get one of the most-legendary performers in modern history to come on your show an perform. CBS is going to need the ratings boost, especially since the Emmys air against the “Dexter” series finale (ugh) and also the penultimate episode of “Breaking Bad” (double ugh). This is without even mentioning NFL football, though we don’t know how big of a crossover there is with that.
