ABC’s ‘Mistresses’ season 2: Weighing the renewal odds, and what could happen

If you are reading this article after the end of ABC’s “Mistresses” on Monday night, you know what exactly transpired for the characters in the end, including a few shocking reveals (Dominic being the father of Savi’s baby) and a couple of reasons to be begging for more. In this situation, you really need to be begging more than for most other shows out there, and for good reason: There is still no official renewal here. Therefore, we are sitting around and hoping that something will be announced soon.

While we have gone back and forth on the odds of a season 2 for quite a while now, we are going to definitively say after looking at all of the information that the odds of it returning or getting canceled are about even, and it depends on a few factors:

Network confidence – We think it is possible that viewership could increase as more and more people find out about the show and watch online. This does not happen often with broadcast networks, but it did with “Scandal.”

Story – Is there a compelling story to be told next year? We are sure they will at least hear about plot possibilities at some point in the process.

Competition – What else do the mad scientists developing programs right now have on their slate? This is the same sort of situation that another solid summer series in “Whodunnit?” is in right now, since ABC may be looking at what they could air next summer before making a firm decision.
