Fox, NFL book Bruno Mars for Super Bowl Halftime Show: Report

FoxThe Super Bowl Halftime Show has become a mighty tradition, where networks try to get the biggest stars in the world to actually do something rather than go and make nachos during the break.

Last year, CBS struck gold by getting Beyonce to come out and perform an electric set, one that even included a brief little reunion for Destiny’s Child much in the same way that Justin Timberlake chose to integrate ‘NSYNC during the MTV Video Music Awards this year. Now, Fox looks to be getting the same sort of public support from their reported selection: Bruno Mars.

We will say this about Bruno: He is a pretty great performer. His sets at the Grammys and other awards shows have been the epitome of music as it should be performed live, but you could also argue in here that one of the major reasons for that is that they were acoustically held in better venues. We don’t know how exactly his band would sound with the echo of a giant stadium in New Jersey. Oh, and that’s another thing: The Super Bowl is going to be held in a cold-weather climate, which means that Bruno could be spending a good part of his performance this year just trying to keep warm for the people watching at home.

Overall, we think this is a risky choice. He’s one of the best artists in the business today, but his back catalog of music is nowhere near Beyonce or some of the bands that have been asked to perform the show in the past. To us, Prince remains the gold standard of a halftime show, especially since you only get so many opportunities to hear him perform live.
