House of the Dragon season 3 episode 4: Ormund’s endgame

Heading into House of the Dragon season 3 episode 4, we had a number of major questions regarding Ormund. After all, what is it that he was really trying to do, all things considered, when it came to his occupation?

What Ormund managed to do in episode 3 was successfully dupe Daemon and most of King’s Landing, at least for a time, with the imposter version of Daeron. Why do that? Why risk enraging the Queen and causing chaos for your whole family? Well, it turns out that a lot may be tied to what he wants when it comes to the Throne itself.

Close to the end of episode 4 we ended up learning that many of his goals are at this point in service of the idea that he wants to do whatever he can to ensure that Daeron ends up on the Iron Throne. He hates most everyone in House Targaryen and wants to elevate the Hightowers however he can. This shows us that he does not care all that much for Aegon, Aemond, or anyone else — this is someone actively in pursuit of his own interests.

Of course, what Ormund does not know is the same thing that Rhaenyra is unaware of — the rather simple fact that Helaena is pregnant. It easily feels like the sort of thing that could dramatically alter everything, but it feels like a lot of what happens from here on out there is going to be very-much dependent on what Alicent decides to do with that information. Helaena is many things, but she is not altogether savvy politically. The best thing that they can do is try to find a way, however, that may be possible, in order to ensure that the pregnancy stays hidden.
